For Pete's Sake - Who is Pete?
Many of you have seen my card or brochure with the slogan: "FOR PETE'S Sake! Vote for Debbie PETErson!". You may have wondered what's up with that slogan? Yes, it does play off my last name. Yes, it does come from an old saying. Yes, a few people have even told me it's a bit goofy. But there is much more to it than that. The phrase gets to the heart of who I am and why I am running for office. When I worked for the Vancouver Housing Authority I got to know individuals behind the statistics of those who lost their homes. I was able to help not "people" but individuals. It is one thing to say "there is a shortage of low income housing". It is entirely different to help an individual stay in their home. As I think of the issues facing the 49th district as well as the ones facing the state of Washington I don't think of groups, I think of individuals. As an example rather than think of "Homeless" I think of the teenager who is trying to go to school while living out of a car with his or her parent. When I think of transportation issues I don't think of the number of cars going across the bridge each day. I think of the small business owner in downtown Vancouver who may lose customers during construction and the family who may have to move because their house is in the way. Pete is your neighbor, the librarian, electrician, the teacher, your parent’s caregiver and your garbage collector. Pete is all of us in the 49th , who work hard, care for our families, and make it to that soccer game on Saturday morning. Pete is the one who is asking for a break from taxes that are impacting his or her discretionary spending money. Pete is the one who is asking his and her state government to be responsible, just as he and she are in managing their businesses and homes. It is a privilege to bring to this job the same skills that I have brought to my current teaching job and other endeavors. Those skills of hard work, diligence, fairness, pleasure in a job well done, will serve all of the PETES in this district. My decision to run for the 49th District legislative position is in response to PETE. As I prepare for this position, I hear PETE’s voice represented by all of the great people of the 49th District who are asking for a representative who will work for their values.
